Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the Brazilian labour market performance in the period 2004-2013, emphasising the importance of high economic growth to reactivate the country’s labour market. After a brief introduction, section 1 presents the challenges Brazil has faced in their attempts to expand decent work, with the backdrop of the national economic performance since 2004. Section 2 analyses the economically active population (employment status, agricultural and non-agricultural activities, activity sectors) taking into account groups of age and sex. After that, in section 3, the labour income is studied in a comparative way between male and female. Finally, the last section summarizes and concludes the paper, discussing the challenges to be faced in order to achieve higher economic growth, as well as their repercussion on the national labour market.
