Abstract

This article aimed to analyze wage floor differentials in old and new automotive sector poles between 2011 and 2013. The analysis follows the bargaining scope methodology. Results reveal that wage floors in factories of São Paulo metropolitan region (RMSP) and normative salaries of those located in São Paulo hinterlands differ little. Differences show significant values, however, when wage floors in factories located in RMSP and in those located in others states are compared. Wage floors of RMSP factories are higher than wage floors in other states’ plants, save for wage floors values in automotive factories of Paraná state. In other words, results suggest that wage costs would not be a relevant factor as to make the automotive sector move to São Paulo hinterlands. In the case of Paraná automotive companies, the study of normative wages indicates that such values change over time and may reach or exceed the wage floors of RMSP factories. Thus, gaps in the value of normative wages in the old and new automotive poles can strengthen and change the wage disadvantage in factories opened recently. In new poles, the lowest normative wages would be a temporary competitive advantage. Such changes in wage floors depend on the productive structures and regional labor market as well as on the union strategies adopted in collective bargaining.
