Abstract

The objective of this study is to discuss the contemporary slavery in Latin America. By using data from the ILO, it was found that about 1.8 million of people lived in slavery conditions in 2012. From 2007 to 2010, the evidence indicates that six thousand of people were victims of trafficking in persons for forced labor, from which 27% were children. In addition, from all the trafficked persons, 51% were allocated for sexual exploitation and 44% for forced labor. In general, the countries studied are aware of the existence and severity of the problem, as well of the expended measures to combat such an activity.
