Abstract

The labor, from the perspective of a cancer patient, has its own meanings, being necessary to explore them. There can also be, through work, a seek of balance, control and normality of life in the face of diagnosis and treatment of cancer, a disease that persists stigmatizing in most societies. The study have two ways of approaching subjects: 1) semi-structured individual interviews with 20 patients with different malignant neoplasms, aged between 28 and 75 years old and 2) execution of 2 focus groups, with questionnaire guide, allowing free speech of 9 subjects in the first group and 6 subjects in the second one, also carriers of several types of cancer. The content of the speeches was analyzed by the emerging categories: 1) meaning of work and identity and 2) control and normality. The research aims to understand the meanings of the work for the cancer patient.
