Abstract

Activities aimed at household chores and care have been ignored by economic theory. The performance of these tasks is predominantly assigned to women, who consequently find themselves in more flexible occupations, which generally have lower wages, in order to balance themselves in carrying out tasks in the productive and reproductive market. From this perspective, the present work intends, based on PNADC/IBGE data for the years 2016-2019, to attribute value to unpaid work so that it is possible to quantify how much these tasks would add to the GDP if they were valued. The purpose of this calculation is to show statistically the importance of these works, in addition to demonstrating that a significant part of the generation of wealth is not considered in the GDP and that this causes distortions in the statistics. Thus, it was found that these tasks would add at least 12% to GDP if they were valued. Therefore, it is possible to show how unpaid work is essential for society and for the maintenance of social well-being.
