Abstract

This paper is a cut-out of a research conducted with children from a popular condominium in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, removed from the Metrô-Mangueira shantytown, about the impacts of forced residential displacement on the school and city experience of these children. Considering the importance of walking in the observation and understanding of urban space, the paper focuses on the description and analysis of the activity adopted in the field of "walking together" with two children through the city, following their trajectory between home and school. Starting from the dialogue between the Anthropology of the Child and Urban Anthropology, we seek to reflect on the limits and possibilities revealed by this methodological strategy. From this reflection, we conclude that, just like home and school, the city is also a significant place for socializing and learning and that walking with children in the city can be a powerful tool for anthropological research.
