The Law 10.639/03 and its implementation process in a High School of the city of Teresina (PI)

Abstract

This work aims to analyze how a state public school in the city of Teresina-PI has been encouraging and implementing in its teaching practices some actions aimed to valuing the ethnic-racial diversity present there. Considering the claims of social movements for the recognition of their identities, added to the sharpening of prejudice and discrimination against blacks in our country and in our city, this analysis is justified. Based on this reality, we will reflect on the advances, limits, challenges and possibilities in the implementation of affirmative action policies aimed at promoting education for ethnic-racial relations, specifically those based on Law 10.639/03, that instituted the compulsory teaching of Afro-Brazilian and African History and Culture in public and private educational institutions of elementary and secondary level throughout the country, with a view to promoting and valuing diversity in the field of formal education. The data that will support this reflection were collected between 2019 and 2023 through interviews and local observation at the school.
