Abstract

The open access to information, guided by two strategies: Via Dourada (Golden Road) and Via Verde (Green Road), instituted a new paradigm in scientific communication, still dominated by commercial scientific publishers. The opening of access to scientific information made it possible, almost immediately, for the results of ongoing academic research to be completed in graduation courses, dissertations and theses that are now stored in the Institutional Repositories of the Universities that are accessible by the general scientific community. The objective of the research is to present an overview of the access modalities applied to the documents submitted to the Institutional Repositories of the Brazilian federative universities. Regarding the methods, the research is classified as descriptive and used the documentary research technique. The research universe is made up of 22 Federal Universities of Higher Education in Brazil, which will attend to the FINEP/PCAL/XBDB 002/2009 Publishing House and even though they currently have a repository information policy. The data were collected by means of the analysis of the homepages of the central libraries, sites of the repositories, official documents of the Universities (portarias, manuals, deposit authorization term). The results indicate that the modalities of access to the documents deposited in the repositories of the institutions vary in terms of time, the proportion of the text that can be seized and the types of public licenses applied.
