Abstract

Social maternity protection legislation starts in Brazil, by the years 1920. As it was part of the agenda of rights strengthening demanded by the recent labor movement organization in the country, these policies are designed over the following decades - sometimes wincing, sometimes widening. However, its implementation was not enough to generate any significant impact on including women in positions of power - whether in labor or political spaces. Considering the reliever aspect that social policies can assume regarding inequalities, this work proposes a reflection on the effects of maternity protection policies in Brazil, specifically considering the impact they have on women. Also, we try to talk about the processes related to the life’s reproduction – here understood not only in its biological dimension, but also in the everyday process of the world's existence maintenance. Our understanding is that this phenomena acts as a restrainer to the way Brazilian will take part in their social, professional and political lives. To elucidate this work, we present literature and data on the subject.
