SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS: the experience in the Postgraduate Programs of the Federal University of Paraíba – Campus I

Abstract

Scientific communication is understood as the process through which the results of the scientific works are turned public to be appraised, tested, used and countersigned by the interested scientific community. This communication can be transmitted through formal and informal channels. In this research, it was chosen as formal channel of scientific communication the scientific journals being constituted therefore, the object of the study. The research had as one of the main objectives to analyse the process of production and standadization of scientific journals in the context of Postgraduate Programs of the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), Campus I, located in the city of João Pessoa–PB, Brazil. The data were collected through sel-explanation questionnairies applied to seven editors. The data analysis leads to the following conclusions: a) there is not any institutional politics to support the journals´ production; b) the normalization does not follow the patterns of the Brazilian Association of Technical Norms (ABNT); c) the editors´ competences are not defined; d) the lack of indexing in services of abstracts/databases doesn't give visibility to the journals; and) the irregularity in the periodicity affects the credibility of the journals
