Abstract

This paper provides a brief overview of the censorship of books at the time of the military dictatorship in Brazil. The focus will be on books with political, social and economic content, considered by the censors to be at odds with government ideals. The text also discusses how the figure of the professional Librarian acted within this context: helping censors or making censorship difficult. Finally, drawing a parallel with the present, this text portrays two examples of recent attempts to censor books, following the principles of public policies and authoritarian exercise of state power, even after the prohibition determined by the 1988 Constitution. Reported facts reveal the importance of a vigilant posture on the part of society, in order to prevent censoring actions, starting from the State, from social segments or groups of interest and power, to establish themselves as censors of contents produced by humanity.
