Abstract

The study was carried out as a final paper to be submitted to the Federal University of Bahia. It examines why the abilities of the professional archivists have not been fully absorbed by the public record offices and government agencies and institutions. The research was conducted in nine agencies in Salvador, Bahia. It pointed out the archivists are not perceived as information agents who are able to perform essential functions in the government sector. These findings seem to explain why there is a low absorption of these professionals in the government institutions. The investigation proposes some procedures to be adopted by those who are in charge of making the archives an active part of the social organization.
