The research focuses on the discussion of two central concepts for Librarianship, that of library and librarian. As a source of analysis of the discourses, the Revista da Escola de Biblioteca da UFMG was used, and the selected articles linked, particularly, to the 1980s. As for the objectives, the research is characterized as exploratory, qualitative and uses the bibliographic method, since it is based on the mobilization and reading the articles published in that journal. The selected decade has several discourses related to libraries and librarians, especially the public library, which was widely discussed in this period, as well as the importance and social function of the librarian. Articles were also found that revealed the concern with the teaching of Librarianship, bibliographic control, automation, the importance of the user, cooperation (building networks, loans between libraries), collections of audiovisual and non-conventional materials and library planning. We can say that there is a presence of critical thinking in several articles that reveal how harmful the closed model of the library, the apathy of librarians, the absorption of norms, standards, services without reflections on the community and the political, cultural, economic dimensions which are distinctive features of the Brazilian reality.
