Abstract

This article is based on the hypothesis that, in the same way that in the Southeast and Northeast regions of Brazil there is a silence on the agenda of federal universities regarding the theme of Multiculturalism in the area of ​​Library Science and Information Science (BCI), the other regions may present the same trend. The question that guides this research is to what extent is the theme of Multiculturalism part of the initial and continued training in librarian and information scientist training courses at Brazilian federal universities in the South, Midwest and North regions? This is a qualitative and quantitative investigation that considers the theoretical framework of Multiculturalism. It aims to analyze pedagogical projects and curricular matrices of undergraduate and postgraduate courses (Masters and Doctorate) in the BCI area with a view to presenting an overview of how the Multiculturalism approach manifests itself in initial and continued training. It confirms the low incidence of the topic in the context of BCI training and points to the desirable discussion of the topic in universities in response to the requirements for training information professionals that favor the achievement of the objectives of the 2030 agenda (UN, 2015). This research adds to the works that have already discussed the relevance of the topic and contributes to the debate and discussions of Multiculturalism in the área.

Patricia Vargas Alencar, Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro

Associate Professor III of the Department of Technical-Documentary Processes (DPTD) at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro. Permanent Professor of the Professional Master's Degree in Library Science of the Postgraduate Program in Library Science at UNIRIO. Serves as Deputy Head of DPTD since May 2022. Graduated in Literature - Portuguese/Literatures (UFRJ), Master in Linguistics (UFRJ) and PhD in Linguistics (UFRJ), with Post-Doctorate in Information Science - PPGCI IBICT UFRJ, during the year 2020, supported by the PNPD CAPES scholarship in the first semester. She was an effective professor at the State Department of Education (SEEDUC / RJ), from 1998 to 2009, teaching the subjects Portuguese Language and Literature in Elementary and Secondary Education. She worked in the Lato Sensu Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses in the area of Literature. She worked in the Normal Higher Education, Pedagogy and Postgraduate Lato Sensu Literacy and Literacy courses, as a public teacher at Rede FAETEC, at the Instituto Superior de Educação de Itaperuna (RJ). She served as coordinator of the Instrumental Portuguese discipline in the distance learning Degree in Pedagogy course (LIPEAD/UNIRIO), within the scope of the CEDERJ agreement, signed between the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro and the State's public universities from 2015 to 2019. Teaches courses at the School of Librarianship related to the area of Linguistics and Portuguese Language. It investigates performance parameters of the reference librarian in a multicultural society. She develops research on the mediation of literary reading as an epistemological object of Information Science based on the theoretical-methodological framework of French-oriented Discourse Analysis. She acts as 2nd Leader of the Research Group: "Public Library in Brazil: reflection and practice".
