Abstract

This article aims to analyze the practice of literary reading through the reading club in terms of training readers aimed at social practices and knowledge. This is an experience report of the Jane Austen Reading Club developed by the IFMA Library on the Bacabal campus with students from technical courses integrated into high school at the Federal Institute of Science and Technology of Maranhão on the Bacabal campus. It is characterized by action research involving literary reading actions of the four main works by author Jane Austen, aiming to encourage and develop reading skills. The practices developed were carried out over a period of four months, promoting literary readings and sharing understandings of these readings. This study has as its theoretical basis the assumptions of Silva (1986), Antunes (2010) and Freire (2006) on the definition and perception of reading, Petit (2008 and 2013) with the importance of reading and the role of the mediator in the formation of readers, Muniz and Oliveira (2014) on the role of social reading mediator in providing access to the world of reading, Oliveira; Ribeiro; Wilke (2012) on the definition and benefits of the reading club in promoting and encouraging reading. And why a reading group? Reading is an individual activity, but when a book touches or stimulates us, it is natural to want to discuss it with someone. A reading club provides this opportunity, enabling meetings and sharing of reading, insights and knowledge.
