HISTORY OF PROFESSOR MELLO CANÇADO LIBRARY

Authors

Abstract

The Professor Mello Cançado Library (BPMC) plays a fundamental role in preserving the memory of Pará de Minas College (FAPAM) and in disseminating knowledge. Since its transfer by the Municipality of Pará de Minas to FAPAM in 1970, BPMC has been essential in supporting students and conserving the college's collection. In 1974, to meet the growing demand for access to knowledge, the Municipal Chamber of Pará de Minas authorized the creation of a Library Department in the building of the Faculty of Humanities of the Catholic University of Minas Gerais. This measure was formalized by Law No. 1501, which allowed for the relocation of books to the new department, emphasizing works useful for consultation by higher education students. Two years later, in 1976, the Department was officially transformed into the Professor Mello Cançado Library, consolidating its status as a recognized and regulated entity. Over the years, BPMC has dedicated itself not only to providing access to information but also to supporting the scientific production of FAPAM researchers and promoting the democratization of knowledge in the areas of courses offered by the institution. Its evolution reflects the continuous commitment of FAPAM and local authorities to improving the educational resources available to students.
