DISORDERS OF READING AND WRITING: difficulties in reading learning for people with dyslexia

Abstract

Reading is an activity that goes beyond the simple decoding of signs, it is one of the main ways to obtain information and reflection, critical awareness, and knowledge construction. Each reader constructs their knowledge according to their reality and experiences, thus, reading is also a production process that could end up recreating knowledge and expertise through this practice. In that sense, this research explains the difficulties encountered by students who have some kind of reading and writing disorder. These disorders hinder these students’ access to information, hampering their satisfactory performance. This research states that several professionals are involved in this process, namely, educators, physicians, ophthalmologists, psychologists and speech therapists. However, why not insert the librarian among these professionals? The research examines the role of the librarian in the mediation of information to dyslexics and what are the real difficulties encountered by both in this process. It is grounded in studies of D'Affonseca, Condemarín, Blonquist, Foucambert, Calafange, Nutti, Freitas, Santos, Navas, among others. It was observed that reading takes important role in the learning process;the lack of information makes difficult for the society to understand the situation of dyslexic; The research ratifies that librarians must understand about the subject and others. It concludes with reflections on the librarians, in terms of their interdisciplinarity, which is a challenge to be sought and who is able to fulfill their true mission of mediating the information to everyone, without distinction of any kind.
