LABOUR MARKET AND GENDER INEQUALITY IN THE PROFESSION OF THE LIBRARIAN
Abstract
The study discusses gender relations in the field of librarianship in Maranhao, reflecting on the inequalities in that profession. It deepens the debate on gender issues in the field of librarianship, placing the information professional in the work world. It uses qualitative and quantitative research to investigate the perceptions of subjects about gender differences and how these differences are constituted. The study points out that there are few studies involving the theme Gender and Librarianship, and they make us think about the realities and the contexts in which this area was built. It discusses the concept of gender as an analytical category of Social Sciences, built upon the historical and social processes to think about the power relations social and culturally established that mark out differences and practices in the social world. The study points out that the characteristics ascribed to women and men are due to the standardization process of behavior due to the strength of socio-cultural structures that produce them. It shows that when implementing this reflection to the current context of librarianship we seek to understand the realities and the conjunctures of the world of work in this field, which reflect gender relations built on the patriarchal model, what makes it difficult for women to be recognized as a subject.Downloads
