Abstract

The paper elaborates questions about the processes of intersemiotic translation and film adaptation in the feature film Adaptation (2002). We are interested in discussing how the translation problem reverberates in the writing of the film narrative, trying to think the translation processes, in which we situate Adaptation, as synchronic poetics, which erases the boundaries between distinct aesthetic regimes, notably between systems of verbal and visual signs. The film, directed by Spike Jonze and scripted by Charlie Kaufman, is an adaptation of Susan Orlean's The Book Thief (1998). The film follows the character Charlie Kaufman (homonym to the screenwriter) in the task of adapting the book to the cinema, a work that takes the protagonist to face the problem of untranslatability, evoked in the film by the notion of mourning and by the appearance of the figure of the Double.
