Abstract

This article draws a comparison between the cinematographic representations of women in Bollywood, from the oldest, such as Mother India (1957) and Ramayana (1961), to the most current ones, such as Piku (2015) and Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022). The films were chosen so that it was possible to visualize how Indian women were seen and consequently represented in the mid-20th century and according to the same perspectives as they were observed at the beginning of the 21st century, thus being able to identify possible developments in treatment and women’s rights. Through the above, it is understood that, over time and through the struggles of the feminist movement, women have gained more space in Indian society, although currently films maintain the culture of patriarchy consolidated in the country.

Ivan Marcos Ribeiro, Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU)

PhD in Literature Theory and Comparative Literature from Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho – Unesp, São José do Rio Preto Campus (2004). He is currently a Full Professor at the Federal University of Uberlândia - UFU.

Caroline Silva Ribeiro

Graduated in International Relations, from the Institute of Economics and International Relations, at the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU), she also develops activities through the study group Research Group on Media, Literature and Other Arts (GPMLA).

Jéssica Regina Guerra de Souza, Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU)

Graduate in International Relations at the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU) and member of the Research Group on Media, Literature and Other Arts.
