REMARKS ON LUDWIG WITTGENSTEIN ́S PHILOSOPHY OF MIND

Abstract

In his philosophy of mind, Ludwig Wittgenstein repeatedly states we do not use our heads to think nor do we think within the head. However, he does not offer clear arguments do sustain such opinion. Furthermore, his readers do not focus appropriately on this aspect of his philosophy. Therefore, this article questions why Wittgenstein insisted on the idea that we do not think with or within our heads. The proposed explanation is that through this statement Wittgenstein was trying to justify his conceptual method, to the detriment of scientific methods used in psychology. In addition, this work analyzes some implications of Wittgenstein’s statement in his critique of G. E. Moore’s refutation of the philosophical skepticism and in his attacks on psychology and psychoanalysis.
