In 1528, the dutch humanist wrote the Ciceronianus in order to criticize the rhetoric of Italian humanists and the way in which they imitated Cicero and his eloquence. However, it was Lorenzo Valla and his stylistic which were under debate. In spite of the differences, Erasmus and the Italians shared something, that is, for both, Valla's eloquence should be exalted. However, what the humanist did not tolerate was how the Italians imitated Cicero. Not only did they value the meaning of words and literary purity (as Valla and Erasmus themselves did), but they also overvalued the Cicero's epideictic rhetoric, which concerned Rome and its history, in order to exalt Christian values.
