The present work analyzes a possible poetics of visibility in Merleau-Ponty's The Doubt of Cézanne. The essay written at the same time as the Phenomenology of Perception thematizes the philosopher's response to Cézanne's concerns about the value of his works. Merleau-Ponty brings his phenomenological conception closer to the existence of the radical caesura provoked in modernity by Cézanne's painting. We focus mainly on the aspect of vision, more detailed throughout the text by Cézanne's paintings that, once marked by the phenomenological aspect, are able to awaken in philosophical thought the encounter with the primordial elements of the nature of things. Such an encounter is engendered by the phenomenon of creative expression, as a pre-reflective experience, which transposes the unprecedented, the invisible, the formless from the scope of art to the lived experience. The paint for Merleau-Ponty does not have a merely representative character, but establishes an ontological visibility. In this essay, the philosopher anticipates the production of an onto-phenomenology, which combines a non-reproductive conception of art with the emergence of being.
