Abstract

This paper aims to present and reflect on data from previous sociolinguistic research, with the purpose of exemplifying studies and interests of the “three waves” of research in Sociolinguistics, since this area involves various approaches and develops research under a common assumption: language and society are inseparable. That said, this study is based on qualitative and bibliographic grounds, presenting the first wave studies as more statistical and binary, the second wave as ethnographic and the third wave as stylistic, detaching from binary patterns. These considerations are made possible in light of Labov (2008), Bagno (2007, 2017), Eckert & McConnell-Ginet (2010), Freitag (2015), among others.

André Luiz Souza-Silva, Universidade Estadual da Paraíba

Mestrando em Linguística pela Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB/CAPES), associado à linha de Mudança e Diversidade Linguística. Especialização em Língua, Linguística e Literatura pelo Centro Universitário de Patos (UNIFIP) e em Ensino de Línguas e Literaturas pela Universidade Estadual da Paraíba (UEPB). Também tem graduação em Letras, com habilitação em Língua Portuguesa pela UEPB e é integrante do Grupo de Pesquisa em Contato Linguístico (UFPB/CNPq). Tem interesse na área da Teoria e Análise Linguística, com ênfase na Diversidade Linguística, Tabus Linguísticos e Ensino de Línguas, atuando com base na Sociolinguística e suas Interfaces.

Rubens Marques de Lucena, Federal University of Paraiba

Graduado em Direito e em Letras (Português e Inglês) pela Universidade Federal da Paraíba. Possui Mestrado em Letras (UFPB) e Doutorado em Linguística (UFPB), com área de concentração em Teoria e Análise Linguística. Atualmente é Professor Associado da Universidade Federal da Paraíba, onde atua no Departamento de Letras Estrangeiras Modernas (DLEM) e no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Linguística (PROLING). Suas áreas de interesse em pesquisa são Sociolinguística e Estudos de Contato Linguístico.
