THE INFLUENCE OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN CLEFT LIP AND PALATE SUBJECTS AND DENTISTS ON THE QUALITY OF DENTAL CARE

Abstract

Objective: The present bibliographic study aims to approach the influence of communication between cleft lip and palate subjects and dentists on the quality of dental care, considering differences in their phoneme production. Material and Methods: The literature search was conducted on the databases: Portal CAPES Journals, SciELO, BBO, BIREME, MEDLINE, LILACS and GOOGLE SCHOLAR. Discussion: Cleft lip and palate are the most common congenital anomalies in human beings and have reached an incidence in the population of 1 case per 650 individuals. In order to minimize sequels and provide a better quality of life, a distinct patient care should be applied from birth throughout the whole life. According to the retrieved literature, speech and language disorders affecting cleft lip and palate individuals often have implications in speech, which may interfere with dental care quality. Conclusion: Problems in communication between dentists and cleft patients might affect dental care as errors in speech production and social withdrawal are involved. A multidisciplinary team of dentists and speech therapists plays a vital role in those people rehabilitation as they suffer from oral cavity, communication and swallow disorders.
