Objective: to analyze the process of creating environmentally sustainable loans. Methodology: Based on a conceptual model of six phases, the steps that permeate the creation of sustainable enterprises are addressed using the unique case study strategy, carried out with a micro-company in the tourism sector. Main results: Based on the proposed model, it was possible to verify that the phases evidenced and that occur before the recognition of sustainable opportunities were contemplated. However, the non-linearity and recursion that comprise such steps are factors that deserve to be highlighted. Although the model suggests that (i) knowledge about the natural / community environment, it emphasizes the ability to (ii) perceive environmental issues surrounding such an environment and, motivated by an interest in helping society, leads sustainable entrepreneurs to (iii) recognize potential opportunities, the case investigated presented a different configuration. Academic contributions: given the scarcity of studies aimed at understanding the process of creating environmentally sustainable companies, this research can shed light on the subject, helping to fill this gap. Practical contributions: the results achieved can help entrepreneurs entering the practice to have a better guidance on which paths to follow in the creation of an environmentally sustainable company.
