The creation of a journal is nothing trivial: it involves a lot of planning and a lot of operation, often alone and without institutional support. In this opinion article, I present a brief summary of my period as editor-in-chief of Theory and Practice in Administration (TPA), between 2012 and 2014. In addition to presenting results regarding the number of submissions, reviews and publication of articles, I emphasize the main advances and challenges experienced in this period, highlighting the learning of the editorial activity itself, in its strategic and operational activities. In strategic terms, I emphasize the importance of knowing and appropriating the rules for evaluating periodicals prepared by the Administration Committee at CAPES, and ensuring greater visibility for TPA. In the operational challenges, in turn, knowing how to use the journal's system, and performing the procedures for formatting, editing and publishing the articles. Finally, I deal with the editorial as a source of scientific capital, analyzing the academic field of Administration in Brazil, in addition to pointing out two other challenges for journals in the country: the search for impact and applicability. I conclude by indicating that, despite advances in our area in the country, the benefit of administrative science in Brazil is quite unknown and, perhaps, not very significant for a large portion of our society. National journals in Administration can (and should) contribute to facing this issue.
