Abstract

In a context of low domestic product growth, productive structure transformation and changes in the labor contracts, the main purpose ofthis paper is to analyze the labor market dynamics in the Brazilian Northeast region between 1981 and 2005. To identify the impacts of such transformations in the class structure of employed population, the analysis will be done according to a new methodology of socioeconomic stratification. The central hypothesis of this analysis is that the transformations ofNortheast labor market in last 25 years resulted in a process of general rising poverty of almost occupational groups, impairing the precarious socio-economic levels of the employed population in this region. To reach such purpose, it will be analyzed the evolution of occupations, formal employees, unemployment, wage distribution and another labor market indicators. The results will be presented in two major sessions: i) a general view ofthe labor market dynamics in Northeast and its historic context between 1981 and 2005; ii) the labor market dynamics according to socio-occupational classes, identifying it major differences and which one had been the worst evolution in this period.
