FORMALIZATION OF WORK CONTRACTS AND EARNINGS IN THE NORTHEAST

Abstract

This paper analyses changes in income distribution which occurred in conjunction with alterations on the worker's profile due to job formalization and increases of both female and people with at least secondary schoollevel participation. Using data from the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD) it is analyzed the years of2002 and 2005. Considering only people in the labor force, the study confronts formal with non formal workers, likewise workers with and without secondary schoollevel, always comparing tbe differences between the Northeast and the rest of the country. The research conc1udes that, even with the improvement, the informality remain high and wages remain low, especially in the Northeast, due to the smalllabor market absorption's capacity. The main manifestation ofthe closed labor market is the high fraction of non formal occupations and its low wages.
