Abstract

The article attempts to show the origins of the school of ordinary language which arose at Cambridge and developed at Oxford. Beginning with the idea of use set forth by Wittgenstein in his Philosophic Investigations, it relates the difficulties encountered, Austin's attempts to overcome them, and later extensions in the discussions of Alston & Searle.
