Abstract

Generative semanticists intend to construct context sensitive grammars which should be able lo incorporate the "actional" as well as the referential contextuality of linguistic facts as a constituent of rule system of the grammar. In the elaboration of the linguistic theory concerning the "actional" context-sensitivity of linguistic fragments, linguists refer mainly to the philosophy of speech acts. Alternative representations of the illocutionary force were proposed by generative semanticisls, and these representations are evaluated here with regard to fundamental points of discussion in analytic philosophy concerning the relation of the illocutionary force with the meaning, the propositional content and the truth value of speech acts. These alternative illocutionary force representations serve as feedback from which methodological options can be delineated and confronted with the position of speech acts theoreticians in philosophy.
