Abstract

Discusses the motivational aspects of authors when requesting the embargo of their works in the Institutional Repository of the Federal University of Amazonas (RIU/UFAM). Although works are deposited in repositories, embargo requests by authors limit or restrict access to the content of works. Thus, this study sought to understand these reasons, making it possible to discuss possible solutions. In order to have this understanding, it was necessary to examine the existing literature on the subject, in order to have a basis for understanding the authors' motivations, making it possible to debate possible measures to circumvent these problems. It should be noted that bibliographic research was used for theoretical reference, as well as documental and field research. As a data collection instrument, a questionnaire was applied to authors who blocked access to the content available at RIU/UFAM. From the analysis of the data, it was noticed that the main motivations for requesting an embargo are the possibility of publications in restricted access journals and patenting processes, based, therefore, on the principles of exclusivity and originality. It is noteworthy that the authors show interest in making their works of public access in the institution's repository, and the pressure exerted by the publishers of restricted periodicals is the main motivator for the restriction of access. It concludes that, through this study, it was possible to explain the motivational aspects of the embargo in the context of the Federal University of Amazonas, as well as to discuss possible solutions to this problem.
