Abstract

The aim of this essay is to introduce the ideas and contributions of the Italian sociologist Luciano Gallino (1927-2015) to for the understanding of finanzcapitalismo – financial capitalism –, as well as the context of emergence, characterization and performance in the last decades of this new stage of globalized capitalism. For Gallino, this political and economic scenario has led to successive reforms and changes in economic life work, labor, cultural and social manifestations that have created a new way of extracting value. The way in which precarious and flexible work underpins a form of class struggle gestated within the political and economic project of globalization is used as an illustration. We conclude that Gallino's contributions to understanding the limits of financial capitalism and the flexibilization of work have the potential to inspire the overcoming of these conditions.
