José Alberto Kaplan’s Sonata for trumpet and piano: stylistic recycling and intertextual modeling

Abstract

José Alberto Kaplan’s Sonata for trumpet and piano bears an undiscussable relationship with the musical language of Paul Hindemith. This observation oriented my study towards a comparative analysis with the work of the German composer. The analysis revealed a close association between Kaplan’s Sonata and Hindemith’s II Piano Sonata, a fact that recommended an informal interview with Kaplan. It was then that I became acquainted with his essay “Intertextuality: applications in the context of musical language”, which served as a theoretical guide to the completion of my study. Keywords: Brazilian concert music, chamber music, music analysis, intertextuality.
