Abstract

This work examines the role of music in articulations of identity during times of intense globalization, and the construction of identities that transcend static representations of locality and/or nationality. Two periods of the Brazilian musical past—the beginning and end of the 20th century—are put in historical perspective to reassess the idea of music, identity, and self-representation in Brazil. The essay addresses two periods in which samba was not in the center of political or ideological constructions of cultural and musical identity and serves as a starting point for a broader understanding of the construction and destruction of samba as a musical symbol of Brazilianess.
Key words: Nationalism. Comospolitanism. Music in Rio de Janeiro.
