Abstract

This work draws a parallel between choral singing in Rio de Janeiro and in Paraíba in the 30’s and 40’s; the former was developed by Villa-Lobos and the latter by Gazzi de Sá. Moreover, it considers the close connection between these two musicians. Then, it presents Gazzi de Sá as a teacher at Conservatório Nacional de Canto Orfeônico in Rio de Janeiro as well as his determination to create a Conservatório de Canto Orfeônico in Paraíba, even after he had settled in the south-east of Brazil. The relevant role that Gazzi de Sá played as a musical educator in Paraíba is stressed by means of the reports presented in this work.
