Abstract

Charles Ives and John Cage, who may be considered respectively grandfather and father of the North-American experimental music, share the same appreciation for the transcendental philosophers (Thoreau and Emerson), founders of a pacifist North America, rousseauist, idealist, a different (North) América. Starting with the first theoretical text written by John Cage, in which he discusses the relations between the United-States and Latin America, the author establishes connections between his musical thought and transcendentalism.
