Abstract

This work is a short analysis of Iannis Xenakis’ “Polytope of Persepolis” through the concepts of Murray Schafer’s Soundscape and Guy Debord’s Spetacle. The term Soundscape is defined by Schafer as the natural, or constructed sonorous environment of a determined place. The concept of Spectacle, as defined by Deborb, is the development of the economy for itself that submits the persons to its proper logic. This work will show that the sonorous environment produced by World War II; the natural
soundscape, and the history of the formation of Iran are among the main sources of Xenakis’ compositional inspiration. Finally, because of its aesthetic characteristics, the “Polytope of Persepolis” can be interpreted as an Anti-spectacle.
Keywords: Xenakis. Polytope of Persepolis. Soundscape. Spectacle.
