Liszt’s Opus 6: occurrences of cohesive discourse.

Abstract

The twelve Exercises from Liszt’s Opus 6 are precursors of his Transcendental studies. The emergence of a cohesive whole in the latter has been confirmed by the author, but the occurrence of such process in the former remains yet to be investigated. That is the concern of this text. The theoretical basis adopted is Dahlhaus’ concept of subthematicism (adapted here), and the methodological procedure resides on the search for analytical relations that are compatible with it. As results, it is possible to identify cohesion strategies already in Liszt’s Opus 6, though they are incapable of establishing a unified formal object.
