Abstract

Abstract: Cleft constructions are complex structures that focus constituents. In Foi Maria quem chegou, a main clause, introduced by a copular verb, and a relative-like clause (LAMBRECHT, 2001), result in a construction which highlights the constituent Maria. This paper deals with the analysis of clefting in translation procedures. The objective of this study is to examine the transposition from English into Portuguese under the hypotheses that the translator's choices for one specific variant over the other are guided by an attempt to keep the pragmatic-discourse functions of the original texts. With the purpose of ascertaining this hypothesis, two novels have been chosen as samples: The picture of Dorian Gray and Harry Potter and the sorcerer’s Stone as well as their respective translations. The data examination revealed that English non-cleft constructions were translated by clefts, which indicates that the translated written text often makes use of clefting.
