Abstract

The purpose of this research was to understand the anti-consumption practices of Seventh-day Adventist Church members, emphasising on motivations, identity issues, resistance and the transition to anti-consumption by these consumers. It was conducted 15 interviews with Adventists and observations at consumption places. The results suggest that Adventist consumers adopt anti-consumption practices in the consumption of food, beverages and clothing for various reasons, mainly due to the incorporation of church guidelines and health concerns. Identity changes are experienced by its members, while they face difficulties to abandon certain consumption habits. The process of transition to anti-consumption proved to be a complex moment in the lives of the participants, who reported the difficulty in adopting the abstinence routine and lack of help from the church. Academic and social contributions are presented.
