NDVI AND EVI TEMPORAL PROFILES ANALYSIS IN DIFFERENT LAND USES IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF GOIANA - PE

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare NDVI and EVI temporal profiles of MODIS images in different land uses between the years of 2000 and 2012 in the municipality of Goiana-PE. Satellite images to identify land use and vegetation indeces products, such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) were used. These indices were obtained by the product MOD13Q1 of MODIS sensor, with temporal resolution of 16 days and spatial resolution of 250 m. A total of nine points were selected to compose the analysis of the temporal profiles of vegetation indexes, three of which were sugarcane areas, three from other crops (temporary crops) and three from native vegetation, in order to identify a pattern in the behavior of temporal profiles of the vegetation for the three types of vegetation cover. The temporal analysis allowed to identify the types of land use by means of visual and quantitative patterns of the vegetation index curves, as well as to verify the differences in the spectral response of the land use types and the indices used (EVI and NDVI). The study was important in the formulation of a method to evaluate and classify types of soil use through multitemporal analysis of vegetation index, and can be applied to any other type of vegetation.
