Abstract

With the growth of the consumer society, the pace of economic activities has become much more intense, which has increased the interference of human beings on nature. For many scholars, the capitalist development model, based on technological innovations, in the pursuit of profit and the increase in consumption levels, needs to be replaced by another one, which takes into account the bearable limits of nature and life itself. The aim of this article was to understand the dichotomy between capitalist productive development and sustainability. The methodology of this work is based on analysis of texts seeking a reflection, about some authors that work the industrialization process and the premises of sustainability. The conclusions derived from this theoretical analysis demonstrated that sustainability is not viable in the capitalist system of production, which segregates, dilutes and diminishes the quality of life of a large part of the population and of the natural resources existing on our planet.
