Abstract

The socioenvironmental degradation resulting from mining activities expands throughout the territories of the Rio Doce basin as a result of the rupture of the Fundão Reject Dam. Such a crime disaster caused the accumulation of waste from iron mining along the river channels, as well as in the spaces previously destined for plantations and the public living spaces of the municipality of Barra Longa. For decisions on the management of this tailings, the Tailings Management Plan (PMR) was prepared, however, this document does not present any proposal in which the affected people, users of the impacted area, make decisions about what will be done. The municipal headquarters of Barra Longa was the only one in which the population lived directly with the tailings in its territory. Thus, understanding the importance of these areas, the participatory social mapping methodology was used to identify elements not incorporated in the PMR, however, of paramount importance for the affected people, as well as their desires, fears and consuetude. In this sense, the reflections point to the importance of using participatory methodologies to better understand the territory, and it is also possible to point out damages that are beyond the socioeconomic and socio-spatial fields, but that happen expressly in the symbolic and immaterial field.
