CARACTERIZAÇÃO E EVENTOS EXTREMOS DE CHUVA NO MUNICÍPIO DE JOÃO PESSOA - PB

Studies that deal with the characterization of extreme rainfall events are essential to help understand the future behavior of the climate system, especially in more specific/detailed studies, such as those on a local scale. Thus, the objective is to analyze the behavior of intense and extreme rainfall events, in the time frame from 1994 to 2022 in João Pessoa/PB. Daily rainfall data were used to identify and characterize intense and extreme rainfall, based on the 95th (intense events) and 99th (extreme events) percentiles. The Mann-Kendall, Pettitt, and Sen's Slope statistical tests were applied to the series of intense and extreme events to assess the existence or not of a trend. The climatological normals of INMET were used to determine whether there has been any significant change in rainfall for João Pessoa-PB over the last 90 years. The results indicate a possible change in rainfall due to the reduction in the average monthly accumulations in March, April, May, July, August, and September. Years with more intense events will not necessarily have more extreme events, and vice versa. Rainy years usually have more episodes of intense and extreme events, while dry years have fewer events. It was found that there is a greater occurrence of intense and extreme events in the rainy season, while in the dry season, rainfall decreases, reducing the occurrence of these events.
