Flooding in urban areas causes loss of lives, material goods, assets and poses risks to public health. Thus, the objective of this work was to map susceptibility to flooding in the urban area and urban expansion area of the municipality of Ariquemes and select prevention, mitigation and adaptation strategies. The information was acquired for urban areas, urban expansion areas and hydrographic contribution areas, with the help of geotechnologies. The urban areas, expansion and hydrographic contribution are 3,381.51 ha, 20,508.83 ha and 944,481 ha, respectively. Urban and urban expansion areas have 5 levels of susceptibility to flooding, classified as extremely high, very high, high, moderate and low. Urban occupation must be carried out in the region classified as low, which covers 71.71% of the urban area and 67.96% of the expansion area. To prevent, mitigate and adapt to problems associated with flooding, integrated strategies are recommended in urban areas, urban expansion and hydrographic contribution (examples: population awareness, adoption of conservation practices, implementation of green areas, maintenance of remaining native vegetation, recovery of vegetation native areas in areas protected by law and updating the master plan). These measures also reduce the risk of water shortages during the dry season.
