This research investigated the influence of adversative connectors in the processing of sentences in Brazilian Portuguese, based on the Strategic Model of Processing (DIJK and KINTISCH, 1983), of the observation about the facilitation in the reading of texts with connectors (MILLIS AND JUST, 1994 ), the type of coherence relationship manifested by the connective (SANDERS & NOORDMAN, 2000; TRAXLER E COLEGAS, 1997; MURRAY, 1997; CROSSON ET.AL, 2008) and the frequency of use of connectives in graduate and high school readers ( CROSSON et. al., 2008). Two experiments were carried out. In experiment 1, with online task of self-monitored reading (movie window), familiarity test and questionnaire about the reader's profile, we investigated the role of connectors in textual processing observing the influence of adversative connectors and the frequency of use of adversative connectors in reading undergraduate students in texts with and without connectors but, however, and nonetheless. In experiment 2, we used the same experimental design and offline tasks as in experiment 1, however, the readers were from high school. Based on the mapping of the reading of the initial and final part of propositions preceded or not by adversative connectors, we concluded that the existence of these connectors facilitated the reading of sentences and, also, the recovery of the text content. In addition, the role of connectors was influenced by the frequency of use and familiarity of the reader with the investigated connectors and by the age / level of education of the reader. Educational Psycholinguistics, through an online and offline experimental task, can assist teachers in assessing students' knowledge / learning process on subjects related to reading / understanding cohesion and textual coherence resources.
