THE NATIONAL IRON SUPPLEMENTATION PROGRAM ON THE VIEW OF NUTRITION PROFESSIONALS IN THE CITY OF CABEDELO, PB, BRAZIL
Abstract
Objective: To analyze the perception of nutrition professionals about the National Iron Supplementation Program in the city of Cabedelo, Paraíba, Brazil. Material ant Methods: This was a participatory, evaluative study in which data were collected through semi-structured interview with all (n=10) nutritionists working in nineteen Family Health Units (FHU), between May and September 2011. Results: These professionals demonstrated adequate knowledge about the program and its operation; however, some differences were found in relation to the conducts suggested by the PNSF (National Health Policy) operating manual. Based on daily experiences, the respondents reported some difficulties in dealing with the PNSF, such as reluctance and discontinuity on the part of pregnant women and children concerning the use of supplementary diet. Complaints such as nausea and diarrhea were reported, as well as shortages in syrups and pills in the family health units. Conclusion: According to the information provided in the reports of the General Coordination of Feeding and Nutrition (CGAN), linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Health, the PNSF may undergo modifications, e.g. distribution of oral drops solution for children. As the necessary actions are adopted in order to improve the program, further research should be carried out in the city of Cabedelo and other Brazilian cities to verify the effectiveness of the policies in relation to the desired reduction in iron and folic acid deficiency cases in the assisted groups.
