Rehabilitation with obturator prosthesis in a patient undergoing surgical excision of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma: case report

Abstract

The oral rehabilitation process in patients undergoing surgical intervention is an essential factor for the functional, aesthetic and anatomical restoration of compromised teeth. In this case report, rehabilitation was performed by means of the construction of a palatal obturator prosthesis, after surgical excision of Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), which is characterized as a malignant soft tissue tumor, uncommon in adults, and corresponds to less than 4% of cases. The rehabilitation process was based on a treatment plan that involves other specialties of dentistry, approaching the mutilated patient in an integrative and humanized way, in order to, in fact, restore health and quality of life. For rehabilitation, it was decided to construct a total obturator prosthesis, with an adaptation around the only dental element in the upper arch. It is concluded that rehabilitation using obturator prostheses represents a valid modality, bringing satisfactory results for functional, aesthetic and anatomical restoration in patients who present with oral-sinus communication.
