“Blow the trumpet among the nations”: the Day of the Evangelicals and the construction of a public culture

This article analyses the “Day of the Evangelicals”, an event held in Campo Mourão (PR), problematising how evangelical groups have been articulating themselves to become recognised as members and constituents of Brazilian public culture. Through the observation of the event, the collecting of materials such as photos, notes in a field diary, audio recordings of the speeches of the preachers, and interviews with participants of the celebration, it was possible to perceive elements that are part of the strategies and the modus operandi of evangelicals to ensure recognition in the public space. We note that the process of secularisation of public spaces, as it was thought from the republican ideal, has been assuming other characteristics in the Brazilian soil, in which religion advances and starts to be a part of and gain legitimacy in the public scene.
